This ancient and prosperous market town sits on the banks of the picturesque River Test. The town centre has a buffet of well-known and independent coffee shops, restaurants and pubs to suit all pockets and palates and the varied shopping on offer is augmented by a bustling market three times a week. The famously lovely abbey is the centre of the town in more ways than one: offering a wonderfully warm welcome and a popular musical programme throughout the year.

On your doorstep

The town centre has all you need for day-to-day amenities and Southampton is just 10 minutes by train or 20 minutes by car. For a day out, just outside town is Broadlands, the mansion and extensive parklands that were once the home of Lord Palmerston and Lord Mountbatten. Or, for a different sort of thrill, visit Romsey Signal Box: a fully restored railway control centre where you can pull the levers and operate the actual signals. The M27 and M3 are very nearby for longer trips inland or along the coast, either east or west.
