Betty Bromage Latheram House Rental

Meet Betty Bromage, rental member at Latheram House in Cheltenham. Betty is a very adventurous 93-year-old who has in recent years discovered her love for wing walking.

Wing walking is an activity when someone stands strapped to the wing of an aeroplane whilst it's flying. We recently caught up with Betty to find out about her inspiring lifestyle and her story of moving to Latheram House.

When Betty was 87 years old she thought “I don’t want to just sit about, I want to go do something positive.” Betty went on to tell us, that she had never done anything like wing walking before in her life but was very interested in giving it a go “my daughter-in-law took me to Staverton to see if I could get on the plane for a start as it’s quite a feet. I managed to do it, it wasn’t bad at all.”

Betty got very comfortable in her first wing walk, so the second time she said to the person in charge “it was a bit boring last time could you make it a bit more interesting this time round”, so they did a figure of 8 all the way around and the third time they did a loop the loop. Every time Betty takes part in wing walking she raises money for charity. “If someone told me when I was 80 I would be doing wing walking I would have told them what a load of rubbish.”

Betty has also recently tried zip wiring after her daughter-in-law bought it as a gift for her. “At first I did a trial one, and the second round they took me up in a lorry into the mountains and I had to zip wire back down. It was amazing, everyone ought to do it.”

Betty hopes in the future to do some more wing walks (if you would like to see some pictures of Betty wing walking and zip wiring we have shared some below).

Not only was it fascinating hearing about Betty’s adventurous lifestyle but also about her life and what brought her to Latheram House.

Betty told us she was married to her husband for 51 very happy years and lived in a cottage in Coopers Hill (famous for the cheese rolling). After her husband sadly passed away she decided she would like to move as the cottage required constant care and she didn’t know how much longer she would be able to drive as the cottage wasn’t very easily accessible. Betty began her search and moved into Latheram House in 2021.

It was the balcony that appealed to her most. When Betty viewed the apartment for the first time she told us “I knew straight away I wanted this one and didn’t want to see any other apartments.”

Overall Betty said she would describe the Latheram House community as “very good and very sociable.” She likes to take part in most of the events and shared that the community had a lovely celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee “the people living here did the catering and had a real get together.” The thing Betty loves most about living at Latheram House is having “the freedom, the company and being right in the heart of Cheltenham. Everyone is very helpful and kind here.”
