For 65-year-old Phillip Laybourne, a resident at Pegasus Homes’ Wooburn Bales, photography is more than just a hobby—it’s a lifelong passion that has flourished since moving into his new home. Phillip, a widower who lost his wife in 2020 and his partner last Christmas, decided it was time to downsize and embrace a new chapter in his life. He moved into a one-bedroom apartment on the first floor with a balcony at Wooburn Bales in August 2024, drawn by the promise of a more manageable and secure living environment.

Having lived in Wooburn Green for the past 44 years, Phillip’s decision to move was prompted by the desire for something fresh and more manageable. Phillip explains, “The brand-new apartments at Wooburn Bales offered the perfect solution—financial security, a hassle-free lifestyle, and the freedom to lock up and leave as I plan a trip to Australia with my daughter in February.”

Since moving to Wooburn Bales, Phillip has been able to dedicate more time to his photography. His love for capturing landscapes and wildlife, especially around the Thames River, has only grown. Phillip’s work has also garnered attention from fellow residents, and he has even raised £10,000 for a hospice through a photography calendar he created in memory of his late wife.

Embracing Community Life

Phillip was attracted to Wooburn Bales not only for its modern amenities but also for its welcoming atmosphere, noting “The sense of community and the opportunity to engage in new activities with fellow residents were significant factors in my decision to move here.” Although he has yet to fully explore all the community’s offerings, Phillip explains “I am particularly interested in joining the Sunday morning bowling sessions led by my next-door neighbour.”

Phillip is even planning to give a talk on his photography at Wooburn Bales, sharing his passion and expertise with his neighbours. This presentation, supported by Pegasus Homes, will highlight the surprising wildlife found right on their doorstep and foster a sense of community among residents with similar interests. Phillip has also contributed his photographs to the development’s newsletter, further cementing his role as a valued member of the community.

Building Connections

Through his photography, Phillip has found it easier to connect with other male residents at Wooburn Bales, forming friendships based on life-long hobbies and mutual interests. He regularly comes together with Dave, who has a background in photography, and Douglas, an aviation and wildlife photographer, to share photography tips, as well as previous work. These connections have enriched Phillip’s experience at Wooburn Bales, providing him with a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

Looking Ahead

Phillip’s move to Wooburn Bales has not only provided him with a more comfortable living situation but also the opportunity to fully immerse himself in his passion for photography. As he continues to settle in, Phillip looks forward to exploring more of what the community has to offer and sharing his love for photography with his neighbours.

Located in the picturesque Buckinghamshire village of Wooburn Green, Wooburn Bales is a contemporary collection of 44 one-, two- and three- bedroom apartments exclusively for those over 60, available for private rent starting from £2,500 pcm.
