Escape the city and visit the Town Moor

Jesmond is renowned for it’s array of independent boutiques, restaurants, and cafes but if you venture a little further a field you’ll see the north-east of England is home to many more beautiful areas to explore. From award-winning beaches and gorgeous city streets to historic castles and famous landmarks, it really does have it all.

One of these beautiful places is The Town Moor which sits directly behind our Jesmond Assembly community. This large area of common land covers 1000 acres, which spans an area larger than London’s Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined and is so vast that freemen of the city have been provided with the right to graze their cattle here at certain times of the year. Similarly to these well known London green spaces, The Town Moor offers the city dwellers of the neighbouring boroughs of Newcastle and Liverpool a much needed escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Given it’s vast expanse, we’ve rounded up a few recommendations for visiting The Town Moor:

The Exhibition Park

Located in the South East corner of the Town Moor, is the Exhibition Park. This special area of the moor has been cornered off to create a beautiful and tranquil park complete with Victorian style bandstand and it’s very own boating lake. The name Exhibition Park was first used during the Jubilee Exhibition of 1887 and the bandstand remains from this period. In the park grounds a weekly Park Run is hosted for all abilities attracting many people from the neighbouring areas of Jesmond and others from all across Newcastle.

The park is also home to Wylam Brewery at the Palace of Arts. This micro-brewery, bar and event space resides in the impressive art deco, Grade II listed building right at the centre of Exhibition Park. Here visitors can enjoy a host of events and festivals throughout the year!

It’s also the ideal place for a leisurely stroll around the duck pond on a crisp winter’s day. Just beyond the parks boarders, it merges with the expansive open planes of the Town Moor. You might even spot a cow or two grazing in the distance!

Walks on the Town Moor

There are many recommended walking routes around the Town Moor. The most popular, is one that covers the most ground and sees ramblers traverse the parks parameters, gaining the best views with the opportunity to explore the entire park. It is a 2.3 mile (5,000-step) route which can be started at any entrance to the park. We would suggest starting and finishing at the Jesmond entrance to the park and once complete venturing to one of the local pubs or cafes for a refreshing or warming drink.

The Town Moor is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors without having to travel too far from home, so grab your walking boots and get exploring!
