Foodies rejoice in Wokingham

The past year has been especially hard on independent, small businesses and now more than ever we need to make a conscious effort to shop local to support the economy in our neighbourhoods.

Wokingham where our Renaissance Wokingham community of 32 later living homes is located, has a wonderful range of locals shops ready to be explored to bring fresher and more wholesome ingredients to your kitchens.

Here’s our pick of the best local foodie places to visit to top up your cupboards…

Grays Farm

Grays farm is one of the oldest retail farms in Berkshire which opened its doors since 1973. From Monday to Saturday, visitors can enjoy picking out their own seasonal fruits and vegetables. Current fruits and vegetables in season include fresh strawberries, rhubarb, cabbage, spinach, and broccoli.

Alongside shopping, the farm also includes a farm trail, play area and picnic areas which are perfect to take friends and family along to enjoy throughout the warmer months.

Fletchers Food Market

Located in the heart of Wokingham is this fourth-generation green grocery business which offers a variety of other produce alongside fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables. The local business which has adapted its strategy for the modern world now also offers 3 types of fruits and vegs boxes and hamper boxes. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 – 4 pm.

Riverways Farms

Previously known as ‘Sheeplands’ farm shop which sold fruit and vegetables, the family-owned business underwent some changes in 2011 to become ‘Riverways Farm’ which now solely sells eggs and poultry. Visitors to the farm can also enjoy the company of the resident pigs, pygmy goats, ducks, geese, and a herd of 18 reindeers which can also be hired for events. The farm is open daily until 6.30 pm. Fun fact: The farmhouse at Riverways aired on BBCs ‘The House a 100k built’ which aired in 2015.

Hare Hatch Sheeplands

This multipurpose local business consists of a traditional farm shop, butcher, café and plant nursery which has been in the local area for over 50 years. Visitors can browse a selection of beers, wines, cider, honey and eggs alongside soft fruits and fresh baked goods all from the surrounding areas. They also stock a wide range of homegrown plants including cacti and succulents, perfect for sprucing up your home this summer Both the farm shop and café are open daily with reduced hours on weekends.
