Staying active and enjoying the great outdoors is essential for maintaining health and vitality, especially in later life. The UK offers a wealth of outdoor activities that are gentle on the joints and aimed at improving your mental and physical fitness.

Walking and Nordic Walking

Walking is one of the best low-impact exercises for seniors. It's easy on the joints and can be done almost anywhere. Whether it's a leisurely stroll in a local park or a more challenging hike in the countryside, walking can improve cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and enhance mood.

Since COVID, walking groups have seen a significant rise as more people have turned to outdoor activities to help improve their mental and physical wellbeing. With social distancing limiting indoor gatherings, walking provided a safe and accessible way to stay active and connect with others. Now, several years on, the popularity has continued to grow due to the sense of camaraderie, promoting physical fitness and helping to combat loneliness.

Nordic Walking

For those looking to add a bit more intensity, Nordic Walking is an excellent option. This activity involves walking with specially designed poles, which help distribute the effort across the entire body. It reduces the strain on the lower body and engages the upper body muscles, providing a full-body workout. Many local groups and organisations offer guided walks, making it a perfect social activity as well.

Cycling

Cycling is another fantastic low-impact exercise suitable for seniors. It helps strengthen the leg muscles, improves joint flexibility and boosts cardiovascular health without putting too much strain on the knees and hips. The UK boasts an extensive network of cycle paths and routes, from gentle trails in national parks to coastal paths with stunning views. One of these stunning locations is our Fitzroy in Falmouth, named by Condé Nast as one of England's best seaside towns.

Cycling is known to reduce the risk of chronic diseases due to the improvements it offers to cardiovascular health and lung capacity. Regular cycling helps to boost circulation, strengthens muscles as well as lower blood pressure reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity while also helping to maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

For those new to cycling or looking for an easier ride, electric bikes provide an excellent alternative. They offer pedal assistance, making it easier to tackle hills and longer distances.

Gardening

Gardening is a wonderfully therapeutic activity that keeps the body moving and joints flexible. It involves a variety of movements such as bending, stretching and lifting, which can improve overall strength and coordination. Additionally, gardening provides the added benefit of being close to nature, which can boost mental well-being.

Simple tasks like planting, weeding and watering can provide a gentle workout, while more involved activities like digging and pruning offer more substantial physical benefits. Many communities have allotment gardens that our residents can make use of for planting and gardening, including Highfields, West Byfleet.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that combines slow, deliberate movements with deep breathing. It's known for its gentle nature and numerous health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility and joint health. Practising Tai Chi outdoors can be particularly invigorating, as it allows one to connect with nature while engaging in mindful movement.

Many local parks and community centres offer Tai Chi classes specifically tailored for seniors. These classes provide a supportive environment to learn and practise this graceful art form.

Water Aerobics

For those who prefer water-based activities, water aerobics is an excellent option. The buoyancy of the water supports the body, reducing the strain on joints while providing resistance for a good workout. Water aerobics can help improve cardiovascular health, increase muscle strength and enhance joint flexibility.

Many leisure centres and swimming pools across the UK offer water aerobics classes designed for seniors. These classes are often held in shallow water, making them accessible even for those with limited swimming ability. Some of our later living communities like Belle Vue in Hampstead have amazing wellness facilities like a swimming pool to help with improving flexibility, coordination and balance. After your swim, you can follow up with some relaxation in the sauna and steam rooms to help keep your muscles happy, post-exercise.

Bird Watching

Bird watching combines the benefits of walking with the joy of observing nature. It's a peaceful and engaging activity that can be enjoyed in various settings, from local parks and nature reserves to coastal areas and woodlands. Bird watching encourages gentle walking and offers mental stimulation as you identify and observe different bird species.

The UK is home to numerous bird-watching spots and many organisations offer guided bird walks and resources for beginners.

Yoga

Yoga is an excellent exercise for improving flexibility, strength and balance. Many yoga poses can be adapted to be easier on the joints, making it suitable for seniors. Practising yoga outdoors adds an element of tranquillity and connection with nature, enhancing the overall experience. The stretch studio at our Cobham Bowers community is a calm and peaceful space, whether you practise by yourself, or join in a class. Residents with all levels of skill are invited to make frequent use of the studio, and feel its benefits. It can also be booked if you want to bring in your own private instructor.

Outdoor yoga classes for seniors are increasingly popular and can often be found in parks and community spaces. These classes focus on gentle movements and breathing exercises that promote joint health and relaxation.

Engaging in these outdoor activities can help those in later life stay fit, healthy and connected with nature. Each activity offers unique benefits that cater to different preferences and fitness levels, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
