A Pop-Up Art Exhibition hosted at Renaissance Babbacombe earlier in the year has raised £500 for two charities. Attracting nearly 100 art lovers to view an eclectic mix of artistic work by artists from across the English Riviera during its two-week opening in March, visitors to the exhibition were asked to vote for their two favourite artists. The two artists with the highest number of votes each won a cash donation of £250 from Renaissance for a charity of their choice.
One of the two artists who received the most votes was Anne Henriksen for her locally inspired stone carving art works. Anne asked for her £250 donation to be made to the art department at King Edward VI School Totnes, where she now lives, having grown up in Sweden and graduated from Plymouth College of Art and Design in 1999. Anne chose the art department at the King Edward VI school because of its support of the artistic development of children, including those with autism.
Louise Holman, a contemporary abstract painter who lives in Noss Mayo in South Devon was the other artist voted a favourite by visitors. Louise asked for her £250 to be donated to Mercy Ships UK to support its work operating the largest charity-run hospital ship in the world, delivering free, safe medical care to some of the least-developed countries. Staffed almost entirely by volunteers, they treat conditions like cleft lips and palates, tumours, club feet, childbirth injuries and burns.
Speaking about the event, Paul Aitkenhead, Marketing Manager at Renaissance said: “The pop-up art exhibition was a great success. We were delighted to welcome so many visitors and bring together and celebrate so much local artistic talent. Every single exhibitor received recognition in terms of votes, but Anne Henriksen and Louise Holman received the greatest share of the votes each and were the firm favourites. Congratulations to Anne and Louise.
“Visitors really enjoyed browsing the stunning artwork which also included pieces by potter Verity De Pulford, painter and ceramicist Karen Lixenberg, and acrylic painter Aziz Khan. We were also very pleased to support two worthwhile causes, one in nearby Totnes, King Edward VI School’s art department, and Mercy Ships UK, which does incredible life-saving work around the world with its floating hospitals.”
