Reinvention in Retirement

To mark International Women’s Day this month, we sat down with some of our wonderful residents to talk about the narrative around ageing and how they are not letting growing older confine them to a stereotype. Instead, our residents demonstrate every day that reinvention is not only possible but joyful, allowing them to fully embrace their individuality and pursue their passions.

Taylor Place resident Caroline highlighted the importance of seeing your life in chapters; each, she believes, offers a chance to reinvent oneself, to be inspired anew. Caroline's message is clear: age is no barrier to growth, and clinging to past identities is unnecessary. With a determination to not let age stop her, she finds joy in the present, pursuing her passions for fashion by discovering hidden gems in local shops, and reigniting her creative spark through art.

“Make the most of life”. - Lyn

Similarly, Steepleton resident Lyn’s attitude to life is to “make the most of it, make the most of what is going on around you”. Lyn felt like she needed to reinvent herself when her husband passed away after 44 years of marriage. “In my head I still feel about 18/19 years old”, Lyn incorporates her youthful zest for life into her later living; embracing the opportunities that are available around her. Lyn, reminisces on how she considered undertaking a Phd when she was younger, and still sees it as an option today. It is never too late to take on a new challenge, earn yourself a new degree and become a new version of yourself.
