Rustington Museum | A celebration of village history

Rustington is known as a delightful seaside village, but did you know about its wonderful history? We recently caught up with Claire Lucas, Rustington Museum’s Manager to find out more about the  history of the village and what you can learn when you pay the museum a visit.

Hi Claire, can you tell us about Rustington Museum?

The museum is a celebration of the village’s history through objects and people’s stories. The village has had many famous residents and a fascinating history!

How did Rustington Museum come to life?

There has been a Museum in Rustington since the 1980s, originally it was housed in what is now the Parish Council offices in Woodlands Avenue and run by the Rustington Heritage Association (RHA). In 2009, the Parish Council opened a dedicated museum in Church Farm Cottages, though the RHA is still very much involved. Following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Museum opened the doors to its current home in November 2019.

Can you tell us about the collections and exhibitions people can view?

We have two galleries and a local studies room for visitors to explore. One gallery hosts permanent displays which show the history of the village from the Stone Age up to the present day. There are artefacts mounted on the walls from all periods of history. The other gallery showcases temporary exhibitions which change twice a year. There is also an interactive display where you can explore the cottages in the village and their famous residents as well as an Oral History bank which gives voices to the residents as they recall a bygone Rustington.

Can you share some interesting facts about the history of Rustington that people may not know?

During World War I there was an American aerodrome under what is now the Sea Estate, it was never completed though and abandoned soon after peace was declared.

Sir Hubert Parry also had his home built in the village and commissioned William Morris to design some of the interiors. The house, called Knightscroft still stands but is now private flats.

How can visitors make the most of a visit to the Museum?

Listening to the Oral Histories provides a fascinating insight into the past and how people recollect their time in the village. You can also discover the “Rustington Circle” and how many famous people have connections with the village.

What do you love about Rustington?

It has a great history and there are so many stories to tell. There is also so much to do in the village with many different clubs and groups with something to suit everyone, not to mention the fantastic independent shops and cafes to enjoy!
