Retired secretary Joan Edgley (88) had been enjoying a tranquil village lifestyle in Puddletown, Dorset with her beloved corgi over the past 14 years. However, when her beloved dog passed away and with the increasing constraints of getting older, Joan decided it was time to downsize to an apartment in a more convenient location where she would also be able to drive less yet still continue her independent lifestyle.

When it came to looking for a new home for the next chapter of her life, Joan was certain that she wanted to rent rather than buy following her friend’s suggestion that renting might be a better option for her downsizing journey at her age, so she enlisted the help of specialist rental retirement agents Girlings to help her find her next home. Joan explains: “I am very happy with my new rental home – it is exactly what I wanted and so much more. The apartment is very spacious and provides me with the same space which I had in my previous home making this downsize move less stressful.  I really enjoy the fact that I am so close to the sea and have been able to drive down to the beach to enjoy a beach walk everyday which has been so refreshing during the lockdowns. The close proximity of my new home to Rustington’s town centre has been a welcome bonus as I can access the local shops with ease without the need to always drive everywhere.

Once lockdown restrictions are eased, Joan is looking forward to visiting more of her friends who live in Rustington and inviting them over to see her new home. Having previously enjoyed being part of various organisations like the Dorset Conservative Party and local Tennis Club, Joan  is particularly interested in refreshing her social networks by getting involved with the various communal activities within her new Renaissance and wider community and more particularly joining a Bridge club which she is very fond of.
