Historic Charm and Local Legends
Rich in history, Kenwood House sits on the edge of Hampstead Heath and was likely built in the early 1700s before being transformed into a neoclassical villa for William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. It is now home to the 1st Earl of Iveagh’s renowned collection of British paintings and is open to visitors.
Also located on The Heath is Parliament Hill, an area steeped in history. Legend has it that in 1605, Guy Fawkes and his fellow Gunpowder Plot conspirators stood on the Hill to watch over parliament, earning it the name Traitors Hills for almost a century. It obtained the name it has today whilst it served as a point of defence during the English Civil War for troops loyal to parliament. Today, it's a popular spot for watching the fireworks on Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve.
Hampstead is popular for its outdoor swimming spots and is home to some of the best in London. Located on Hampstead Heath is three natural bathing ponds as well as one 60m lido.
