Torquay the home of a Literature Legend

Having sold over two billion copies of her novels worldwide, Dame Agatha Christie is the best-selling fiction author of all time. Best known for her fictional detectives, Hercule Poriot and Miss Marple, Agatha Christie was born and raised in Torquay and often returned to Torquay and the wider South Devon area throughout her life.

The author and playwright absolutely adored the area, almost as much as we do, and many of her books feature locations through the English Riviera. We’ve put together a shortlist of the best places to visit in the area with a connection to the acclaimed author.

Burgh Island

Located across the South Hams district, near the charming seaside village of Bigbury on Sea, a golden strip of beach leads visitors over to Burgh Island. The island is home to Burgh Island Hotel, an iconic art-deco hotel. The island is recognised as being the inspiration behind the book ‘Evil Under the Sun' and 'And Then There Were None'.

Meadfoot Beach

Just a short drive from our new development in Babbacombe is Meadfoot Beach. With its inviting crystal blue water, Meadfoot Beach is the ideal spot for taking a dip on a warm summer’s afternoon – something that Agatha would often do upon her return visits to the area. 

Kents Cavern

Also located a short way from our Babbacombe development is Kents Cavern, one of Europe’s most prominent prehistoric Stone Age caves. Tourists from across the world are attracted to these easily accessible caves that provide visitors with an underground maze of wonder. The Cavern is thought to be the inspiration behind Hampsley Cavern in Christie’s novel "The Man in the Brown Suit".
